Weekend Trips with the Kids on a Shoestring

Isn’t it great fun to take the children away on a weekend trip? After a long, hard week of work and school, it is a fantastic way to spend some together and do something exciting.

You might think that a lack of cash is the biggest problem with doing this but it doesn’t have to be.

Go Camping or Caravanning

The cost of staying in a hotel can amount to a huge percentage of the overall price of your trip. If you have a tent or a caravan then now is the time to use it. As well as being a lot cheaper than staying in a hotel this is also a lot more exciting. Most caravan sites and camping grounds charge little for the right to stay there for a few nights and many of them now have excellent facilities too. This is an easy way to arrange an independent trip which is a little more adventurous that staying in a hotel.

Take Food with You

Another big part of the cost of a weekend trip with the kids is the food. If you are going to be out being active all day then you are all going to build up a healthy appetite. One way of making sure that you don’t spend a fortune on food is to take the stuff away with you. A trip to your supermarket will let you stock up cheaply on a lot of food. If you are going to be driving to your destination and buying things that don’t need frozen or refrigerated then there is no problem with this. Alternatively, you could decide to shop for your food in supermarkets in your destination instead, which can actually be pretty good fun too.

Plan Ahead

Planning ahead is a great way to save some money too. By doing this you can work out what free activities are on, how to get around at low cost and lots of other things. All you need to do is spend a little bit of time checking out details of the destination on the internet before you head off.  There might be some incredible things you can do for free there which many families never even find out about. Quiet beaches, free museums, ruined castles, and coastal walkways are some of the free things you might come across.

Be Creative

Most places have some popular tourist attractions which cost money to go to, such as zoos and aquariums. However, by getting creative you can come up with alternative ways of having a good time without spending so much money. If you are out in the countryside maybe you can hire bicycles and go for a long ride or organize a treasure hunt for the little ones. The fact that you are all far from home and have a lot of time on your hands means that it should be easy to get creative and think of ways of having a great time without spending all your cash on it.
